Germán López, Althay Páez, Beselch Rodríguez and Yone Rodríguez join forces to perform a musical partnership between the timpani and small guitars from other traditions.
Luis Morera, a unique and well-known voice of Canarian popular culture, and Furte, a show with nine instrumentalists on stage created by Germán G. Arias and Augusto Báez, will also represent the music.
Two round tables will shed light on the essential defence of the cultural heritage of the elderly and rural women.
Workshops on silbo gomero, chácaras and drumming will create a space for dialogue between tradition and citizens.
Burka teatro will perform the dramatised route "Doblones para la eternidad", which deals with the family saga of the conquistador Hernando del Hoyo and is contextualised by the populariser Néstor Varona.
Ephemeral art, a classic of Atlántico Sonoro, will be present again with the creation of a large wooden sculpture by Luigi Stinga.
The poster for this special edition is the work of Vallehermoso-born designer and cultural manager Arón Morales.
The CO2 emissions caused by this campaign will be offset through reforestation in collaboration with the Fundación Canaria para la Reforestación (Fundación Foresta).
They are small instruments but of great importance in the popular culture of the Canary Islands and other parts of the world. Germán López, Althay Páez, Beselch Rodríguez and Yone Rodríguez, four of the most important young musicians of the music scene created in the Canary Islands, will join forces to offer the show Timples y otras guitarras pequeñas, in the 20th edition of the Festival Atlántico Sonoro. One of the most solid and stable festivals of our Archipelago, in its twentieth anniversary, is committed to the most unique sounds of our popular tradition, such as the timple or the recognisable voice of Luis Morera, who will also offer a concert as part of the 2024 programme, which will include activities in La Gomera and Tenerife. The musical area will also include Furte, an initiative with nine instrumentalists on stage, devised by Germán G. Arias and Augusto Báez.
As usual in Atlántico Sonoro, several disciplines will be showcasing the rich heritage of the Canary Islands. In the case of history and the performing arts, Burka Teatro will be offering a dramatised route on the family saga of the conquistador Hernando del Hoyo, with the support of Néstor Varona.
In this 2024 edition, the conferences and workshops will once again create a space for dialogue between those who have preserved the cultural legacy of the islands and the younger generations. Thus, peasant women and the elderly will share their knowledge in two conferences, while local experts in the field will give workshops on Silbo Gomero (in collaboration with the Silbo Gomero Cultural Association), chácaras and drums.
On the other hand, ephemeral art, an essential part of Atlántico Sonoro, will be present with the creation of a large wooden sculpture by the artist Luigi Stinga. In addition, the Festival will recognise the work of a figure of great importance in the transmission of the Canarian cultural legacy, with the presentation of the Atlántico Sonoro 2024 Award.
With free admission to all activities, until full capacity is reached, this special edition, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary, the Festival, created and produced by Cauproges, is an event funded through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, integrated in the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism ("Next Generation EU Funds"). It is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, Promotur Turismo de Canarias S.A. and Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural S.A., Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, Cabildo de La Gomera, Ayuntamiento de Vallehermoso, and with the collaboration of Ayuntamiento de Tacoronte, Asociación Cultural Silbo Gomero and Fundación Foresta.
Vallehermoso, in La Gomera, will be the setting for most of the activities, making it once again the epicentre of the dissemination of traditional Canarian culture and its influence on current proposals, which fuse our legacy with new cultural expressions. It is precisely in this municipality that the designer and cultural manager Arón Morales, author of the poster for this twentieth edition of the Festival, was born. He has combined the idea of the rings of wood that show the age of a tree with the silhouette of Roque Cano, witness to such a long-lived and solid initiative.
The cultural legacy
This 20th edition of the Festival Atlántico Sonoro will begin this Friday, 12 July, with two emotional encounters at the Casa de la Cultura in Tacoronte, Tenerife. At 6 p.m., Patrimonio: mayores referentes will take place, in which the value of the elderly as maintainers and transmitters of the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands will be highlighted. Given that every artistic product is born from the previous proposals, the cultural legacy of the elderly is of vital importance and Atlántico Sonoro proposes a space for dialogue with the new generations.
One hour later, at 7 p.m., it will be the turn of Mujeres Campesinas, who will address the culture that is carried out in non-urban areas and vindicate their role in the creation and development of cultural heritage.
Workshops and dramatised route
The Plaza de la Constitución in Vallehermoso, La Gomera, will be the setting for a workshop on chácaras and drums on 13 July at 11 a.m., given by local experts. Tourists and residents alike will be able to learn about an art that draws from such deep ancestral roots that it moves away from more harmonious folkloric manifestations to showcase a unique musical proposal. Chácaras and drums make up a complex musical and poetic choreographic system, as they are the basis of the traditional Gomeran ballads.
In the same location and on the same day, at 12 noon, in collaboration with the Silbo Gomero Cultural Association, a second Silbo Gomero workshop will be held, in which this whistled language, intangible cultural heritage of the Canary Islands and of Humanity since it was declared so by UNESCO in 2009, will be disseminated.
In the afternoon, at 19:45, Burka Teatro will start the dramatised route Doblones para la eternidad, a journey through the family saga of the conqueror Hernando del Hoyo, from the 16th century, with the historical and patrimonial contextualisation of Néstor Verona. In it, Doña Magdalena Joven, a devoted wife and self-sacrificing mother, prepares his funeral, while her relatives fear that she will squander the family fortune in her lavish funeral. As a result, family intrigues arise that threaten her plans.
Popular music from La Gomera to the world
The timple and other small guitars of the world is the title of the concert to be given on 18 July at 20:30 in the Plaza de la Constitución in Vallehermoso, La Gomera, by some of today's leading young performers of this traditional Canarian instrument: Germán López, Althay Páez, Beselch Rodríguez and Yone Rodríguez. Coming from Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife, they will come together in La Gomera to demonstrate that the timple, like its "brothers", are very current signs of identity and are a sign of cultural richness and diversity.
The following day, on 19 July, at the same venue and time, the musical project Fuerte, created by the musicians Germán G. Arias and Augusto Báez, will take to the stage. Personal and popular stories are expressed through a group of nine musicians, with two violins, viola, cello, double bass, drums, percussion, flugelhorn and piano, fusing different styles.
On 20 July, also in the Plaza de la Constitución in Vallehermoso, at 20:30, it will be the turn to enjoy one of the most unique and recognisable voices of the Canary Islands, that of Luis Morera. A multifaceted artist, who has worked as a painter, sculptor, poet and musician, he will offer his most intimate side in Atlántico Sonoro, with songs alluding to nature and Canarian culture, most of them composed by himself. Amor infinito is the title of the show by Morera, who was part of Taburiente, a legendary group from the Canary Islands, and which also gives its name to the album released in 2020, as part of his extensive solo career.
Ephemeral art at the Almendrillo viewpoint
From 13 July to 13 August, visitors and residents can enjoy, at the Mirador del Almendrillo, in Vallehermoso, a large-scale recycled wood sculpture by Luigi Stinga. This piece of ephemeral art is already a classic in Atlántico Sonoro, and is a unique and unrepeatable experience in each edition. Stinga creates, on each occasion, a work alluding to the culture and heritage of La Gomera, in which he combines tradition with contemporary expressive forms.
Offsetting the carbon footprint
The 20th edition of the Atlantic Festival shows a firm commitment to contribute to halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050. To this end, a percentage of the CO2 emissions generated by this activity will be offset through reforestation, with the collaboration of the Foresta Foundation. In this way, reforestation will help to halt the serious process of desertification and erosion suffered by the islands and to recover and improve the exceptional environmental and cultural heritage of the Canary Islands.
